Surgery dissected, Part I: Robotic arm osseointegration

The 55-year-old had his arm severed and he nearly died when he was dragged under a 40-tonne lorry while training for a triathlon last July. Jim is currently trying to get a pioneering new limb to carry on helping other amputees.

This immersive MDT discussion will take a deep-dive into the complexities of the Robotic Arm Osseointegration procedure, that is required to attach a fully functional bionic prosthesis to Jim’s arm.

Recorded in Florida, host Joe Mullings, Chairman and CEO of The Mullings Group, will be joined by Dr Nadine Hachach-Haram FRCS (Plast), BEM, the Founder and CEO of Proximie, and Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Clinical Innovation Lead, at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

Using the Proximie platform, experts from around the world will virtually scrub-in to the discussion in Florida, to provide visual and augmented guidance on the detailed steps of this world-first operation. Lead Surgeon Dr. Mr Edmund Fitzgerald O’Connor, a highly experienced Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a special interest in complex microsurgical reconstruction, will be joined by Dr. Jason Souza MD, an leading expert in amputation surgery to deliberate over the surgical procedure, techniques and innovations involved in Osseointegration.

Virtually joining the studio will also be the patient Dr. Jim Ashworth-Beaumont, who will share his incredible story, including his aspirations to one day compete at the Paralympics.

Supporting the clinical discussion will be Dr. Aidan Roche, a bioengineer, medical doctor and scientist with a goal of returning hand function to patients, Dr. Maleeha Mughal, Consultant Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Dr. Georgios Pafitanis, Locum Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust, and Dr. Victoria Rose, is consultant plastic surgeon working at both St Thomas’ Hospital and King’s College Hospital.
